There are two gardens at Camphill Milton Keynes Communities that we manage and enjoy all year round. The Garden Workshop allows our service users to learn how to plant, grow and harvest fruit and vegetables.
Pennyland Garden is situated on the edge of Pennyland Housing estate. It is the older garden established in the mid 1980s by the Camphill pioneers. It has a formal feel with defined areas for vegetables, soft fruit, herbs and a mature apple orchard.
Willen Garden was established in the early 1990s during the development of Camphill MK Community in Willen.
It is a younger sibling of Pennyland Garden and has a different character to it as it surrounds the community houses, The Chrysalis Theatre, our Café and other Workshops.
We have a mature fruit orchard, Living Willow Sculpture Garden, a paddock, soft fruit area and two large fully functioning polytunnels.
Both gardens grown fruit and vegetables for the houses, the Café, the Shop and Landcraft Workshop. We use organic and biodynamic methods, where possible, although we are not registered with Soil Association or Demeter.
The Garden Workshop aims to work the land, grow crops and train the Service Users and Co-Workers who assist the Workshop Supervisors in day-to-day activities and help the Service Users to achieve their goals.
Each year, starting in January and ending the gardening season in December, garden team members experience:
- Learning how to grow fruit and vegetables
- Experiencing changing activities during the gardening year
- Meeting new people
- Observing nature
- Prune fruit trees and bushes
- Grow seedlings
- Prepare the ground for planting and seed sowing
- Plant seedling in open ground and polytunnel
- Clean and repair hand tools
- Plan for the following season
- And many more activities
The Gardens are open all year round but main activities take place during spring, summer and autumn. Winter is a much quieter time when we reflect, plan and prepare for the new growing season.
